Will workouts make FML worse like in Dercums?

Familial multiple lipomatosis is a rare disease. With this condition you get multiple lipomas (dozens or hundreds) all over your body. Lipomas are usually encapsulated.

Will workouts make FML worse like in Dercums?

Post by skarlettz33 » Wed Oct 16, 2013 7:41 pm

I'm in the process of trying to get a diagnosis so I am unsure if I have FML or Dercums.

I have at least 100 lipomas, most of them appearing in the last two years during pregnancy and after.

I have much weight to loose and have been working out at least 3 days a week but I aim for 5. I have noticed more lipomas since starting and more pain plus it takes me a few days longer than my workout buddy to recover as well.

From what I've read, strenuous workouts are bad for people with Dercums and should be avoided. That lactic acid can not be discarded in those with Dercums which then causes inflamation and the formation of more lipomas.

Does anyone know if this holds true with FML? I can't find any information on it and am worried I'm causing myself more harm than good by working out.

Has anyone else noticed an increase of lipomas with working out and are certain that they have FML and not Dercums?

Hi skarlettz33! Thanks for posting.

I know what you are saying makes more sense if you have Dercum's although I believe moderate exercise is good for you even then. In my opinion FML and Dercum's are the two sides of the same coin and they share many charasteristics albeit Dercum's being the more troublesome condition. Whether your condition is Dercum's or FML it's impossible for me to say at this point.

The lactic acid thing is interesting and it might trigger inflammation in tissues and lipomas. We have talked about it here before but there are no certainties. There are athlets here who say they have noticed worsening of their condition after heavy exercising.

So perhaps if possible you should only do cardiac exercise before we know more?

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply!

I totally get what you are saying about the two disorders being the same coin. At first I thought I had FML and it's only been in the last 6 months or so that I started suspecting Dercums due to the increasing levels of pain and discomfort.

The lactic acid theory is indeed interesting. I for one notice more lipomas after an intense workout. It seems I've gotten at least 20 more over the last two months since starting back up at the gym. I notice that my body stays in this swollen puffy looking state since working out again too... it's hard to explain. I've lost a few pounds but my clothes fit tighter and it's all over verses bloat and doesn't feel like bloat. This is the first time I've experienced this.

I get some lab results back on Monday, hopefully I learn something and my Doctor figures this out! What type of Doctor did you see to very a diagnosis?
